QCF: Battletoads (2020)

6 years is a long time ago—hell, I bet some of you reading this aren’t even 26 years old yourselves, and couldn’t have possibly imagined what the vibe was back then. Well, there was one thing that dominated the scene that time in contrast to the occasional sighting at your local laundromat, and that’s over-the-top Arcade games.

Among all of the Final Fight’s and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle clones, however, was Rare’s last hurrah for their infamous Battletoads series with a coin-op gem that wouldn’t get a proper console port until 2015 with Rare Replay, a compilation that included it along with the original title for NES. Needless to say, it made an impression with players; between the success of their inclusion onto that collection, and the various cameos the characters have made on other popular titles like Killer Instinct and Shovel Knight, the fever for more toads had grown. Unable to ignore the interest for it any longer, Microsoft and Rare decided to formally bring them out of retirement with a brand new title for the Xbox One.

Partnering with Dlala Studios after working with them on Sea of Thieves, the latest entry to the franchise is a reboot that’s starkly different from anything the Amphibians have ever done before—and thankfully it’s a step in the right direction, albeit a undeniabley clumsy one.

t’s about to get real come November, the long awaited arrivals of the Sony PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and Series S will finally launch to the public. Sony and Microsoft have finally unveiled the major details for their next generation hardware after months of speculation and brevity, and well, the hole killer pandemic thing that’s still going on (wear a fucking mask y’all.)

Color us unprepared too because not only is George too broke to steadily invest into both; Andrew STILL doesn’t have a 4K, and Ser is laughing at us in 720p—that doesn’t mean that  don’t have some words to share though!

Join us as we break down prices, specs, launch titles, controller designs, overall value, and more here on this short-but-sweet episode of Press Pause Radio.

o we don’t give a darn what y’all say, Peppa Pig for Smash, or get the EFF-OUT!

In an effort to deliver better content, at a more consistent pace, we'll be continuing the format we introduced last episode, and it's one that’s going to be different from the one we’ve done for the last ten years. Instead of catching up on all the news and games that have happened between shows before the chosen featured topic, we have decided to release each of these segments as a dedicated episode in their own right, including the featured topic, with a projected weekly schedule in mind—so this week, it’s all about what’s been in our consoles!

We sit down to discuss a ton of games AND mini consoles like Summer Carnival ’92 Alzadick, The C64 Mini, Untitled Goose Game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Summer Carnival '93: Nexzr Special, Paanzer Dragoon Orta, Astral Chain, Xbox Games Pass, Gears 5, the Sega Genesis Mini, and so much friggin’ more! This episode may be a bit longer than what we were shooting for in the new format, but we kept pretty busy with our games this week, and wanted to make sure we covered everything that we booted since we last graced the mic—hope y’all enjoy this week’s show!
