QCF - Demon Gaze

t seems as though every year NIS releases one or two games in hopes that they will be as big a hit as Disgaea, some have come close or so I've been told, but most seems to fall flat on their face. I for one hold my breath when I hear that a new NIS title will be hitting shelves and wonder “Why are they still around”. While Demon Gaze isn't anywhere near Disgaea in most respects, it has its moments.

You take on the role of Oz (or whatever name you see fit for your game self), a young man who awakens in a dungeon with no memories of his past. With the help of a woman named Lorna, a retired Demon Gazer you escape the dungeon and find yourself at the Dragon Princess Inn, run by the lovely Fran.

QCF: The Witch and the Hundred Knight

s much as I've wanted to love NIS America in the past, oh, decade or so, I've found it extremely hard to do so. While Nippon Ichi developed Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, it was actually published by Atlus, so it's no wonder that its localization was top-notch. But it has seemed, time and time again, that every Nippon Ichi game that has seen release since has been nothing more than mediocre tripe at their best... and utterly abysmal at their worst.

The Witch and the Hundred Knight is NIS America's very latest PlayStation 3 outing and their first fully-3D game engine ever produced. Despite having a host of in-depth strategic elements, it's still a pretty straight forward action RPG, so it breaks the typical Nippon Ichi SRPG mould. The real question here is, is The Witch and the Hundred Knight any good? Read on.

QCF: Trigger Happy Havoc: Danganronpa

he pressure of succeed in your adult life in today’s society gets stacked thicker by the year, and this generation—it’s palpable. So naturally, any opportunity to attend a private school that only accepts the best and the brightest in exchange for guaranteed success in life would be a stupid one to pass up right? Fifteen individuals thought that, and it’s a shame too, because unbeknownst them and the impression of the prospect of their enrollment, it will be the worst decision of their lives.

The Vita hasn’t pulled any punches lately, and with both, tenured third-parties advocating the hardware alongside Sony welcoming fresh and bold ideas from independent developers, the variety in its library has gotten pretty juicy. Giving the title a chance, Nis America brought to the portable underdog, the bizarrely Japanese murder mystery thriller Danganronpa under the card of Trigger Happy Havoc, and well, lets us just say...that the Ace Attorney series will have some serious competition after this series picks up the steam it’ll get from the direction it’s heading in.

QCF: Legasista

Dungeon crawlers have been touch-and-go as of late. Sure, they’re addictive and they’ll quench the thirst of anyone who’s looking for a hearty challenge, but boy, they can be a burn. Where the genre became insipid, however, was the frequency of these all too similar experiences, and their releases lumped in so closely with one another. Refreshment is in the air for this once ambitious genre, and its name is Legasista.

From NIS America, Legasista tells of a tower covered in an ivy growth that climbs to the heavens; in it is an ancient weapon capable of granting miracles and unleashing utter destruction. Grounding the conventions of the dungeon formula, Legasista outlines its intentions pretty clearly to bridge the gap of accessibility for the obtuse crawler types. The story of one boy and his task to undertake the ultimate sacrifice hits most targets and marks a stimulating sign of the dungeon crawler heading in the right direction.

QCF: ClanDun X2

Have you ever been sitting around your house and thought to yourself “Man, I miss games like Secret of Mana and Alundra”?

Well you're in luck, my fellow gaming enthusiast, because ClanDun X2 attempts to hit all of those marks and more. NIS America is a company who likes to tickle our RPG nostalgia bone on a regular basis, and this entry throws a little DIY ingenuity into the mix as well. I didn’t know what to expect when I started, as I hadn’t played the firstClanDun and I’d have to say that for the most part I was pleasantly surprised.
