QCF - Demon Gaze

t seems as though every year NIS releases one or two games in hopes that they will be as big a hit as Disgaea, some have come close or so I've been told, but most seems to fall flat on their face. I for one hold my breath when I hear that a new NIS title will be hitting shelves and wonder “Why are they still around”. While Demon Gaze isn't anywhere near Disgaea in most respects, it has its moments.

You take on the role of Oz (or whatever name you see fit for your game self), a young man who awakens in a dungeon with no memories of his past. With the help of a woman named Lorna, a retired Demon Gazer you escape the dungeon and find yourself at the Dragon Princess Inn, run by the lovely Fran.

PPR Presents Play Play: Muramasa: The Demon Blade

egend tells of a sword that grows in strength by feasting upon every drop of blood it spills, soaking in the rich mineral of the crimson life of every victim it claims; the mythical blade—Muramasa. George, Andrew, and Ser continue their path of playing Vanillaware titles as they discuss what makes Muramasa one of the, if arguably not, the very best title the Japanese studio has put out yet; too bad the Metroidvania design is shit, which they’ll cover too…

QCF: Trigger Happy Havoc: Danganronpa

he pressure of succeed in your adult life in today’s society gets stacked thicker by the year, and this generation—it’s palpable. So naturally, any opportunity to attend a private school that only accepts the best and the brightest in exchange for guaranteed success in life would be a stupid one to pass up right? Fifteen individuals thought that, and it’s a shame too, because unbeknownst them and the impression of the prospect of their enrollment, it will be the worst decision of their lives.

The Vita hasn’t pulled any punches lately, and with both, tenured third-parties advocating the hardware alongside Sony welcoming fresh and bold ideas from independent developers, the variety in its library has gotten pretty juicy. Giving the title a chance, Nis America brought to the portable underdog, the bizarrely Japanese murder mystery thriller Danganronpa under the card of Trigger Happy Havoc, and well, lets us just say...that the Ace Attorney series will have some serious competition after this series picks up the steam it’ll get from the direction it’s heading in.

QCF: Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F

he first time I went to Pax (2012) I told myself I would not be leaving Boston without three particular games: Final Fantasy Type Zero, Suikoden II (One of these days, I promise) and Project Diva. I made it out with two of the three. Me being me I actually ended up buying Project Diva Second instead of the first game, but thankfully these games don't have “Play of Previous Title Recommended” stamped anywhere on them.

Upon learning that the Project Diva series would be making the transition from PSP to PS3 under the Title “Project Diva F” I got super excited, making it my must get game when we attended Pax East in 2013. Sadly I left Boston with my obsession with Pokémon renewed and no Project Diva F.  However, two months after Pax, my luck would change as on June 06, 2013, Sega confirmed that Project Diva would be coming to the West.

QCF: Dragon's Crown

ragon's Crown is a game that was released in a volatile market. The video game industry was seeing, more or less, a dynamically progressive shift with some seriously heavy-handed feminism leading the charge regarding the depiction of women in video games. This was quite damning to Dragon's Crown's risqué (though admittedly beautiful) art direction. It was born into existence from a super-niche developer and a rapidly-fading publisher as a retail-released, 2D multi-platform game on the cusp of a next generation hardware launch. In addition, by and large, the public hasn't exactly paid much attention to it thanks to the impending Triple-A launch season. So now that all of the controversy has subsided and - more importantly - I've had a chance to play it extensively, It' time that Atlus and Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown got its final word.

PPR Presents Lime Light: Tempo

unny that we would be doing Lime Light on more than one 32X game year…no really, it’s actually hilarious—the opportunity to do this one was just too good to pass up. One of the exclusive titles for Sega’s Mushroom-shaped add-on is one of the reasons most Sega owners would even install the 32X, and it’s from the same people that brought us Bonk, Air Zonk, and Gungrave…We’re streaming Tempo.

Tune in around Wednesday evening, September 11th, at 5:45 PM pacific time and join us in the chat on our Twitch page, getting down with the phat beats and animation so Japanese that you’ll be shouting “Nanja korya!” at all the colors coming out of your interwebs screen.

QCF: Resident Evil 6

This review was a freelance assignement, written by Joshua Newey from Sega Addicts. Be sure to check Sega Addicts out by clicking here!

Few franchises have had the same growing pains as Resident Evil. While the first few titles initially garnered solid reviews for their groundbreaking qualities and resonating atmosphere, their now-maligned “tank controls,” flimsy puzzles and pre-rendered visuals makes it feel somewhat disingenuous and anachronistic to list them amongst my favorite games of all time.

Maybe that's why the series continues to struggle with the same identity crisis that's been slowly growing since games like Code: Veronica. With one foot set firmly in B-movie sci-fi horror, and the other shifting deeper and deeper into the cinematic world of dramatic camera angles, explosive set pieces, and muscle-bound heroes, Capcom seems increasingly unsure about how to help the series grow without shirking its roots or driving a wedge between itself and its longtime fans.

QCF: Dead Or Alive 5

Team Ninja has seen better days. Their recent efforts towards a blockbuster action game failed since Tomonobu Itagaki left after the completed development of Ninja Gaiden II. In the aftermath of Metroid: Other M and chasing after the same goal of Ninja Gaiden 3 to appeal to western sensibilities, Dead or Alive 5 is the latest installment in the storied 3D fighting franchise that aspires to be relevant again in the emergent renaissance of fighting games 2012 has seen.
