Short Films Offer New Dimensions in Gaming Tributes

n the past few years we’ve seen plenty of artists and moviemakers recreate their favorite video games in the form of smaller YouTube segments. For fans and by fans, we’ve witnessed everything from Chell’s life after Aperture to an unfortunate reality for Mario.

These videos only become more sophisticated as time passes. More independent studios look for ways to portray their favorite games and add more lifelike effects to them. And though some become more exaggerated or overly ambitious in the process, we've still experienced some amazing productions.

On that note, the following segments represent what’s truly becoming a culture of its own.

QCF: Abobo's Big Adventure

he NES is the most iconic representation of video games to this day. Even after 27 years its fond reverence knows no bounds, and whether you’re a gamer or not its image will remain forever embodied as the avatar of video gaming until the end of time. If you're now thinking, “Gee, I don’t know George, I know the NES is really important to video games but what you’re saying seems a bit exaggerated,” then you may belong to one of two camps: You either never owned or played one, or you didn’t have the opportunity to experience many of the games for it beyond Super Mario Bros and so on.

Well, you’re in luck, because not only does Abobo’s Big Adventure hit home with anyone who’s ever been graced with an NES in their childhood but it also manages to spectacularly cater to both of the aforementioned demographics. Abobo’s Big Adventure steps up and then owns up to the daunting responsibility of representing it’s source material and its best form and becomes more than just a simple tribute game.

QCF: To The Moon

I have stated on several occasions that I am looking for the video game equivalent of a Pixar movie; something that can touch on many different emotions, without being overbearing or pretentious at all. Most video games have had sad moments, but unfortunately they mostly feel forced or fail at telling a heart wrenching story at all. Freebird Games must have been reading my letters, because To The Moon accomplishes everything that I’ve asked for and by focusing on what is important in any great tale, To The Moon has quite the story to tell.
