QCF: ModMic USB & ModMic Wireless REVIEW
We have been using Antlion Audio's Mod Mics for some time now; the quality of our livestreams has been top notch, thanks to the quality of the microphones that Antlion produces. So naturally, we were quite excited to check out their latest gear: The ModMic USB and ModMic Wireless!
For those not in the know, the ModMic line can turn any pair of headphones into a kickass headset. All ModMics simply adhere to the side of a pair of headphones with a magnetic anchor and voila: a custom gaming headset that sounds great for both the speaker and the listener. Thanks to the strength of the magnets in the modmic's sockets, they'll stay in firmly in place, but players can also simply remove the mic from their headphones when not in use.
We have always used AudioTechnica headphones for as long as we've made content, so being able to stream with an excellent mic without losing the sound quality we've gotten used to is fantastic.
The new line of ModMics are even more plug and play than before; with the ModMic USB, players simply plug the mic into any USB port and that's it. The included cable clasps hold the ModMic's cabling right alongside the player's headphones'.
But the ModMic Wireless is even simpler; plug in the included USB dongle, hold both buttons until the Blue LED flashes rapidly and they'll sync. That's it. No wires to mess about with, making for a clean, easy setup. Bonus points if using wireless headphones!
Both the USB and Wireless have a switch in the mic capsule that allows users to select omnidirectional capture for a more general recording field and a unidirectiondal setting for a more directional, focused field. But how do they sound? We find out in the latest Random Play.
All ModMics come standard with a snazzy carrying case and extra magnets and adhesive pads. Once again, the ModMic USB has an added set of plastic clasps for cable management. The ModMic Wireless, on the other hand, comes with a Micro USB cable for charging and a USB A extension cable for players that may need to position the receiver away from their PC in the event of interference due to metal panels or dense USB Clusters (which often affects wireless mouse dongles.)
The ModMic USB is available for $79.95, and while its quality doesn't match the ModMic Wireless, it's still right on par with the ModMic 5 without a mixer or enhanced EQ balance. The ModMic Wireless, on the other hand, is $119.95 and while it may seem particularly expensive, it's great sound quality makes it the ultimate streaming companion, especially with software like Voicemeeter!
