PPR 139

ow more than ever, Online Multiplayer has established itself into a bonafide standard in the Modern Gaming Climate with dedicated servers that operate on a scale that gets bigger by the year, making the term “Massive” a bit redundant in the process.

Even as you read this, there are thousands of players scrambling through the Online landscapes of Elden Ring and Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, titles that are packed with all of the Cooperative and Competitive ventures you can shake a sword or gun at—and yet neither of them fall under the category of MMO.

As we see the “Games as a Service” Model getting used more frequently, we stop to ask the question as to whether or not the genre of Massive Multiplayer Online games is steadily becoming a thing of the past. Granted, the immensely wild success of Final Fantasy XIV certainly says otherwise, and even contemporaries like Elder Scrolls Online and World of Warcraft are still operating at an impressive capacity despite Endwalker’s dominating performance—it’s still enough to make you wonder just how far these titles can go?

Join George Sean, and Andrew as they pore over the timeline of MMORPG’s, covering everything from their humble beginning, to their boom, and soft crash in the late ‘aughts, and so much more. Be sure to brush up on your HIPPA laws, because we’re going to punch down deep for Episode 139 of Press Pause Radio.

Pax Prime 2013 Impressions: The Elder Scrolls Online

here's nothing like stepping out into the new day and seeing the sun cast a radiant glow on the crystallized snow. A glance upward reveals a winged procession suddenly scattered by the howl of a savage wolf close by. The General calls out with desperate urgency, snapping the player back into the world. The dead have risen, and now several of the townspeople have gone missing. The experience feels very familiar, and in a title like The Elder Scrolls Online it is a smooth transition into the MMO landscape.

QCF: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

ideo Games have, and forever will be, an outlet and conduit for human emotion. They represent an interactive experience that transports a user to another digital realm and demands a certain amount of attention, and the quality of said game is inherent from the return of investment players shell out in order to experience it; Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a fickle martinet in this regard.

Capcom has enhanced and redefined Monster Hunter Tri for the fledgling Nintendo console with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. And while it utilizes a much more competent hardware structure to its fullest potential this time around, Monster Hunter is still Monster Hunter. With the cult following notwithstanding, the appeal hasn’t seen the same sort of redox treatment, and the barrier of entry is as obnoxious as ever and isn’t exactly tolerable in this day and age anymore. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate demands the tolerance from its players regardless with tedious direction in painstaking detail, and promises to reward the player for their efforts. But ultimately in the end, you’re left feeling shorted.

City of Steam Preview

Some MMORPGS seem much less accessible than others, which is why MOBAs and other strategy games currently dominate the multiplayer world. One studio, however, wants to revitalize the connection between in-game lore and player interest that used to make MMOs among the greatest online role-playing experiences.

Never Forget San d'Oria: Hiromichi hints towards FFXI on the Vita

Recently, Hiromichi Tanak (Final Fantasy XI's former lead designer and producer of Final Fantasy XIV) informed Famitsu that Square Enix is considering making the PS Vita the next platform for its long running MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI. Initially, I was very happy to hear this news; I have been a sporadic player of the ongoing online adventure for years and a handheld alternative seemed like the perfect fit. However the more I daydream about this match made in Heaven, I am starting to realize that it is really a terrible accident just waiting to happen.
